Over a year ago, one of the most prominent events in recent memory took place in our country. Years, if not decades, of build-up led to a single significant moment, the 2022 Philippine Elections. It was a day when the only thing that mattered to over 113 million Filipinos was the final tally of votes that would eventually appear on their television screen. 55 million citizens passed on their hopes and dreams to the respective candidates that they believed in.

When the final results were announced, the eyes of many focused on the two names that stood out and the numbers next to them. The tally revealed that 31 million placed their trust on the side of the red, while 14 million placed theirs on the pink. This revelation only added more fuel to the already blazing wildfire.

Numbers that were supposed to lead to a decisive conclusion only resulted in even more questions and controversies. Millions and millions of Filipinos wanted to fight and prove that the number they believe in holds the utmost value and importance. In reality, this whole situation only showed that the most crucial and significant number out of all that was brought up was number one.

We are citizens of this single, particular country. In the bigger picture, when things go right we progress as one. And when things go the opposite, we regress as one. We are a nation after all. Behind the cheers and cries of every single Filipino citizen lies a common, existing goal. And that’s for our country to find and walk the path that leads to growth and success. Achieving this, however, will only be possible if we, the citizens of the Philippines, find an even footing where everyone can walk forward in unison.
